Aylesford Parish Church

The Parish Church Of St. Peter and St Paul has stood on its hill overlooking a ford of= the River Medway for nearly a Millennium. The earliest remaining part of the present building is the lower part of the Norman tower. In mediaeval times a bridge replaced the ford, being then the only bridge between Maidstone and Rochester. This bridge, the church on the hill above it, and the old houses and inns with their high-pitched roofs in between, together form a romantic pictur= e we see today.

England’s first Carmelite prio= ry in 1242, was disposed of at the dissolution of the monasteries in 1538 by He= nry VIII, but was restored in 1949 by Carmelite monks. Now an important pilgrimage centre, the medieval buildings are surrounded by tranquil gard= ens that are open for the public to view. There is wheelchair access to all areas.
