Dear Friends,

There is a wonderful passage in the Bible:

"For I know the plans I have for you, 'declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come to pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek with me all your heat." Jeremiah 29: 11-13

I read this to some of the Mums and helpers who attend our small Kidzpraise (Parent and Toddler) group, and asked them whether they thought they could see some sense in their lives as they looked back, whether there was any development and guidance, and whether they felt that God had been involved and had helped them. Then some of us drew maps of our lives, a bit like snakes and ladders journeys. I did one with one of the toddlers, so it had a picture of her being born, then with a bottle in her mouth, then learning to crawl, and then to walk. Quite a short journey! The adults' journeys were much longer with swooping ups and downs, though showing a general progression upwards. Mine had quite a few zig-zags in, when I had changed direction. We had some interesting discussions as a result of the journeys we had drawn!

It is good to look back and try to make sense of our lives, whether or not we have a Christian faith. For those without a faith, it's a case of learning from experiences and trying to take control of our situations, whereas for people of faith it's rather, trying to involve God and see where He is leading, and then looking back to see if we can find a pattern or direction. Certainly, I can see a clear sense of direction as I look back on my 6 decades, and it isn't really of my making. The two main careers I have had are the two I always declared I would NEVER do, and yet I can see how God has guided me and made sense of it all.

That passage from Jeremiah is written to God's people as a whole, but it is equally applicable to us individually. You might like to ask if it's true for you!

Best wishes
