From the Vicar_March 2015

Dear Friends in the parish and beyond,

Recently a youngish man who had come to a church service after many years away from the Christian faith said that her had found hope there. In the rest of society he couldn't see any hope.

Now, hope is spoken of in the Bible. Christian hope is not the rather airy fairy optimism we usually mean when we use the word; Christian hope is strength for the future anchored in God's promises. It is also drawing on our knowledge and experience of God in the past to know that His promises will be true in the future, even though often not in the way we expect.

A verse I often come back to in the Bible: "Let us fix our eyes on Jesus . . . who for the joy set before him endured the cross" (Hebrews 12:2). That is hope!

In the middle of winter, even before the new year comes in, the spring bulbs begin to push up, and through the worst weather of the winter they continue their growth; and we know that in March/April they will burst into flower. Christian hope is like that: definite expectation that God will see us through, often through hard times.

Best wishes to you as, like me, you look for the spring.
