Dear Friends,

I don't remember having Harvest festivals in Africa where I was brought up - or maybe it's getting too long ago for me to recall! But certainly in this country harvest seems to be part of everyone's memory from their childhood - perhaps because the seasons are so marked in Europe, unlike those in Africa. We will be celebrating harvest at the beginning of October, with a harvest supper, services and a concert. It's a time to be thankful for all that we have, and a time also to think of people who don't have much. One year we raised money to pay for three clean toilets to be provided in the Third World (the organisation is called Toilet Twinning!) To help people locally we now collect groceries all through the year, to give to needy people - not just the homeless, but often families who are finding it difficult to make ends meet. We now give this to two food banks: one at Pilsdon in West Malling and the other to Maidstone Day Centre. At Harvest this year all the food donated will go to these organisations as well. Both food banks provide parcels to people in the Aylesford/Eccles area if required.

We have also been holding a collection in church to send to Christian Aid for helping refugees in Iraq, people in desperate need. We are so fortunate here, aren't we, compared with some of the desperate situations we see on our television screens.

With best wishes
