Dear Friends in the Parish,

"Tidings of comfort and joy" we sing in one carol. And yet Christmas is a time of so many mixed feelings: remembering our childhood Christmases which seem to gleam all the brighter as they recede further into the past; seeing Christmas in the eyes of children today; thinking of people who arenat with us now; keeping up with the Christmas card writing and posting, dealing with long queues in the supermarket; trying to avoid eating too much; seeing members of our families we may not get on with.

In the end, whether Christmas is a time of comfort and joy or not depends, as with so many times, on whether its message is inside us. Relying on all the glitter of Christmas will probably prove disappointing, but knowing God with us will help us to revel in the season and to cope with the sadnesses or disappointments that often come with it. And for those of you who find it difficult to believe, be open to the possibility of it being true. Too good to be true? I don't think so!
