Lest We Forget
This year we remember the sacrifice made by our armed services and many civilians in the First World War. It is 100 years since this war started. Many countries were similarly affected.
Should we collect memories from the few who do remember or have stories from family? Shall we all plant red poppies in our gardens this year?
My mother was 8 when the war started and she remembered the young men from her village all marching off to war. Did they have any idea what they faced? Most of them were listed as dead within a month. Any young man who did not enrol would be given a white feather of cowardice by people in the street.
I have printed the names from our church war memorial. There may be families in Aylesford and Eccles who knew one of these men and may wish to share memories with us.
We do not glorify war but the sacrifice was massive and perhaps the stories need telling for new generations.
