Vicar's thought for the month
(from the parish Magazine)
Dear Friends,
Dear
Friends inside and outside the parish, when Kathy and I were living in
South America the supermarkets, even in the capital Asuncion, were
quite small, simple affairs. Sometimes you couldn’t get essentials like
sugar, or you were just lucky to get your ration of a small plastic bag
of sugar. So when we came back to England, the splendour of a British
supermarket with its endless aisles you can get lost in, its vast
choice and its opulence was staggering. And yet we soon got used to it
and took it for granted.
Recently I was reading a Bible passage
in which Jesus says getting to know him is like passing from death to
life. Elsewhere He speaks of our being saved, being reborn, moving from
darkness to light, being freed from prison or slavery. We read these
phrases quite easily, and yet Jesus was striving for the biggest images
he could. Knowing Jesus should, apparently, be a huge, wonderful
experience. And yet all too easily we get blasé about it, like Kathy
and me in the supermarket. Familiarity breeds not contempt, perhaps,
but maybe boredom.
So now I’m trying to catch myself and to
think through again these huge images for knowing Jesus. After all, He
let Himself be crucified to enable us to enjoy their benefits want to
appreciate them to the full!
Best wishes to you as you think about them too
Chris
