Dear Friends in the parish and beyond,

St. Peter's School have started holding their assemblies in the church, and this week parents were invited as well. I try to involve the children and adults as much as possible, especially through asking them questions; and the responses can be extremely interesting! The topic I had been given this week was Forgiveness, and I was impressed how many people put their hands up to say that they found forgiving people really hard. All sorts of difficult situations were mentioned, and one parent said that the topic had been just right for her that day. When I asked the children why we are encouraged to forgive people when we have been hurt by them and it's surely natural to hang on to the animosity, again the answers were really profound: it's to enable you to be free, one said; another said, it's to be able to let it go.

I think in the end forgiving others is a good idea for our own sakes - to stop the animosity eating into ourselves. After all, if we spend our time brooding on the hurt someone has done us, then we are letting what they have done to us carry on hurting us. Surely we want to find a way of taking away its ability to carry on hurting us?

Yes, it is hard to let the anger go - and, even if we manage to do so, we may still have to sort the original matter out; forgiving someone doesn't mean just pretending it never happened.

When I run out of energy to forgive others, I have to come back to God's forgiveness of me and let it seep into me: if He could send His only Son to die for me, and I am forgiven for all my past, then that helps me to forgive others - hard as it is sometimes.

Best wishes to you,
Chris
