In May this year Christians celebrate Pentecost (it used to be called Whitsun), the coming of the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus called "the One alongside".
Like many of you, I know, I'm not very knowledgeable about my computer. I have to use it, and I know how to do basic things, but more complicated things, or if it decides to misbehave, and I'm sunk. Fortunately, Kathy is quite knowledgeable and much more patient! When computers first came in and neither of us knew much about how to operate them, I would ask a friend, but he usually made things worse by telling me all sorts of stuff I didn't want to know. All I wanted wanted was help with my current problem, not information about all sorts of problems I hadn't yet encountered. I didn't want someone to do things for me either; I just wanted someone to sit next to me, ALONGSIDE me, and who helped me step by step.
That's the function of the Holy Spirit in our lives as Christians: to be alongside us and to help us, step by small step, to live as Christians. Not someone who takes over from us, nor someone who stands back with arms crossed leaving us to it, but someone NEXT
to us, helping us to live out God's ways. The Holy Spirit is simply Jesus' representative, sent to take the place of Jesus once he'd gone back to heaven.
We're told in the Bible that he's with all Christians; let's invite him to work more and more in our lives.
