Under: Vicar's Monthly Letters
I am writing this while the Olympic Games are under way; you will perhaps be reading it during the Paralympics. There has been so much to inspire us about the Olympic Games: the camaraderie amongst the competitors, even when they are competing against each other; the support of the crowd for people of all nationalities; the sense of friendship and common humanity, the marvellous organisation and facilities; the tales of triumph over hard times; the humility and wide-eyed wonder of many of the medal winners; the sight of royalty, politicians and famous personalities all united in support of the competitors. All the muttering and doubting beforehand has been swept aside in a flood of enthusiasm and joy.
It has reminded me how much we need to be inspired , even though that goes against the grain of the British reserve and caution. We need to be inspired in our Christian faith too; it's so easy to slip into a grey, rather pessimistic half-faith, and to be suspicious of emotion in our faith. There is surely a difference between transient feelings and a lasting sense of wonder, inspiration and joy, which is surely what our faith is all about. So yes, let's be inspired by so many wonderful aspects o the Olympics and Paralympics; and let's allow ourselves to be inspired again by our God and all the marvellous truths of our faith in him.
Best wishes to you
